Weddings: What is a Christian Marriage?
God has made us for relationship. "He who made them from the beginning made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one." (Matthew 19 v 4) We are social animals and we need relationships on a deep personal and spiritual level. Christians believe that the belonging together of a couple in a life-long union is the best way of finding our deepest fulfilment. This gives us a sense of meaning and identity as we realise within the marriage relationship who we are, and what we mean to our partner and to God.

Marriage is a union on a spiritual as well as a physical level. In Christian marriage we accept God's right to make rules for us to live by, and we open ourselves up to that help what Jesus Christ offers as out friend and Saviour. By asking for a marriage ceremony in church you want a service in which you can offer to God the whole of your lives together. You are acknowledging the claims God makes on us and the resources He gives us by which we live. During the service you are reminded of Jesus' presence at the wedding at Cana in Galilee and that He is present at your wedding too.

So the moment when you stand before the altar and make your promises " to have and to hold, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish" until parted by death, is indeed a solemn moment. You are being asked to make a very serious commitment which will totally change your life; a commitment which means giving rather than receiving. Perhaps before you go any further you ought to ask yourselves the question "Is this really what I want?"
